"Now We're Cooking" is a vocational foodservice training program geared toward learning disabled and alternative learning students as well as non-disabled high school students. This unique program is made possible through Community Service Block Grant funding and partnerships with Laurel, Seaford, and Cape Henlopen School Districts that provide vocational foodservice and work readiness skills to participants.

The Adult Culinary Arts Training Program is sponsored by First State and funded by the Delaware Department of Labor -Workforce Investment Board. The program was designed to tap in to one of Delaware's fastest growing industries which offers employment opportunities to qualified applicants regardless of age, background, skill or experience level. The full service restaurant industry has provided the most jobs to the Sussex County economy in the past few years and continues to grow at a steady pace. During its first year, this program trained and placed 273 students in the food service industry!
The goal of the program is to target unemployed, underemployed, disabled, and dislocated workers moving from welfare to work or seeking a career change and provide them with basic culinary skills, job retention training, and job opportunities.
The Adult Culinary Training curriculum offers quality, cost effective training for interested adults students seeking employment at various levels in the industry from food handlers to cooks. There are two sessions offered - Summer and Winter. Session consist of 430 hours of training which includes:
- Food preparation instruction by a certified Chef Instructor.
- 350 instructional hours.
- Multi-instructional methods.
- 40 hours of "Job Shadowing" at an employer site.
- 40 hours of paid Internship at an employer site.
- Training in a full, commercially equipped kitchen.
- Hands on lab experience.
- Assistance with literary, math, and reading skill (if required).
- Student designed projects.
- Field trips.
- ServSafe Certification preparation. (Both State and National offered)
Interested in applicants must:
- Be 18 years of age or older and a Delaware resident.
- Provide proof of US Citizenship.
- If male, must register with Selective Service.
- Have a valid Driver's license or State Photo ID.
- Own or have access to reliable transportation.
Most importantly, the applicant must be willing and committed to finding employment at the end of the training program.
