CULINARY ARTS TRAINING PROGRAM

The culinary arts field is growing fast - especially in Sussex County.  More than 273 jobs were added in one year and those jobs make up 13 percent of the total new jobs added in Sussex County!

The Adult Culinary Arts Training Program taps into one of Delaware's fastest growing industries - the food industry.  A total of 273 culinary arts related jobs were added in Delaware in just one year!  These new jobs in the food service industry made up 13% of the total number of new jobs in Sussex County.

 

Those who successfully complete this training are prepared to take advantage of the many employment opportunities offered in our area - regardless of their age, background, skill level or experience.

 

This hands-on program gives students the opportunity to master basic culinary arts skills and also provides soft-skills training and job placement services after completion of training.  Once accepted and enrolled, students also become eligible to receive assistance from other First State programs such as housing counseling, after school programs and emergency services.

 

The Training Process

 

The training program operates two sessions - summer and winter.  Each session consist of 430 hours of training which includes the following:

 

  • Instruction under the direction of certified chef instructors

  • 320 instructional hours

  • Multi-instructional methods (Visual, audible, hands-on"

  • 40 hours of internship

  • Training in a full commercial kitchen

  • Hands on lab experience

  • Assistance with math & literacy skills, if needed

  • Student designed projects

  • Field trips

 

The Application Process

 

Seating is limited!  Interested persons must:

 

  • Be 18 years of age or older

  • Males born after 1960 must be registered with the Selective Service.

  • Provide proof of citizenship and residency

  • Provide proof of driver's license and reliable transportation

  • Complete an application online by the specified closing date. 

  • Sit for an interview with the Program Manager, Job Developer & Chef Instructor.

 

If selected for the program, you must be committed to completion of the entire training process from intake to job placement.
