On May 29, First State's Senior Companion Companion (SCP) commemorated National Senior Corps Week (May 18-22, 2015) during their in-service meeting with Sussex County senior volunteers, i.e. senior companions. Program Manager Valarie Wright and staff thanked the more than 40 senior companions for their service in helping elderly and disabled clients age with dignity and remain independent in their homes. Joining them was Georgetown Mayor Bill West who led the companions in the Senior Corps Pledge, and the newly appointed Georgetown Chief of Police, Randal "RL" Hughes. Both Mayor West and Chief Hughes acknowledged the companions for their service to better individuals, their families and the community. Likewise, First State Executive Director Bernice Edwards praised the companions for their labor and care, offering words of encouragement and thanks for the relief they provide to families/caregivers. Georgetown Chief of Police, RL Hughes, thanks Janet Workman, Senior Companion for her service.

"When faced with older adults in need, I will provide support and compassion so they may age with grace and dignity.

Working for the greatest good, I will use my lifetime of experiences to improve my country, my community, and myself through service.

I am a Senior Corps Senior Companion volunteer, and I will get things done.
