On January 6th, First State Community Action Agency hosted the Lunch with a Purpose event at the Atlantic Sands Hotel in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. This event was held to raise awareness and support for First State’s Senior Companion Program (SCP) helping homebound seniors and individuals with disabilities.
More than 200 women attended the event, including SCP recipient Ms. Janice Young and her companion Claudette Furst. Ms. Young spoke at the event, sharing her touching story about how the compassionate friendship and care of one person—her senior companion, Claudette Furst— literally changed her life and made her feel like a human being again.
First State’s Senior Companions Program recruit senior volunteers—age 55 and over—who provide friendship and assistance, including light housekeeping, light meal preparation, and transportation, to seniors and other individuals having difficulty with daily living tasks. As a result, these recipients are able to remain independent in their homes, retain their dignity, and make new friends. For more information about the Senior Companion Program contact Valarie Wright at 302-856-7761 ext. 131.
