Senator Carper visits First State, lends helping hand

Every day is a great day to serve! But the day is even more special when your senior U.S. Senator drops by to lend a helping hand.

Funny, friendly, caring…That’s is the kind of impression you get when you’re in the presence of Senator Tom Carper. On February 17, Senator Carper made a stop in Georgetown to First State Community Action Agency to check out the good work of community partners and to lend a helping hand. He first sat down and talked with clients waiting to have their tax returns filed at the tax site inside the Bernice M. Edwards Community Training and Resource Center. He wanted to know how the tax prep services, financial education, and earned income tax credit were helping Delaware taxpayers save money and manage household needs. He chatted with site coordinator Sandy Hagans of First State and commended First State’s staff and volunteers for operating the sites with integrity and efficiency.

Then it was off to the great outdoors as the Senator embarked upon a caravan of cars, minivans

and SUVs waiting to pick up food for their families. The families would take home a box of food along with children’s reading book and Perdue chicken, a contribution made possible by support from the United Way of Delaware and the collaboration of several community agencies {Sussex SUCCESS} led by the Sussex Health Promotion Coalition. The First State Senator was ready and eager to help. Carrying bags of chicken and loading food boxes onto carts and into vehicles, Senator Carper joined agency staff and community volunteers to make sure these families had the means to eat hearty and well. He would extend his service with a hand shake, a warm smile, even a joke or two as individuals thanked him for his assistance. His willingness to roll up his sleeves and take part in an effort that has fostered remarkable teamwork and has fed hundreds of families in need demonstrates his genuine care and concern for the citizens of Delaware. He depicts it as the Delaware Way….and we would have it no other way!!

First State Community Action Agency is thankful for the generous support of all those who took part in the Sussex Success Food Drop on Februry 17. Special thanks to these extraordinary partners: United Way of Delaware, Sussex County Health Promotion Coalition, Food Bank of Delaware, Read-Aloud Delaware (provided children’s books), Delaware-Technical & Community College (student volunteers), Delaware Readiness Teams Delaware Early Childhood Center, and First State Community Action Agency. By the end of the day more than 100 Sussex County families/households were served because of your great participation and support!
