Dover– On Saturday, August 18th, First State's Promoting Safe & Stable Families program held a "Hair & Beyond" back to school community event in Kent County.
The event focused on generating community awareness of the consultation and support services offered to low-income families through the Promoting Safe & Stable Families Program, the Delaware Fatherhood & Family Coalition, and the Community Leadership Committee. Moreover, the agency partnered with local barbers and stylists to provide free hair cuts and hairstyles for children in the community. By offering free hair care services, a service which many families cannot oftentimes afford,we are helping to build children's self-esteem and reduce the family stressors that negatively affect caregiver’s emotional well-being. First State would like to thank all nonprofit and business partners who took part in hosting and supporting this community event. Together we can ensure our local children to go back to school looking and feeling their best and prepared for academic success!
Promoting Safe and Stable Families is a statewide, family-centered intervention which offers one-on-one counseling to stabilize families and reduce the level of stress, thus eliminating abuse. Services include family consultations, assistance in the development of family support groups, setting goal-development plans of action, and referrals as needed. If necessary, financial assistance is available in emergencies to help buy food, pay rent, meet a mortgage or pay for utilities.
