Join us for this FREE performance of Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice" on Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at First State Community Action Agency (308 N. Railroad Avenue, Georgetown, DE). Show begins at 4:00PM.
Play is performed by professional actors from Delaware Shakespeare. While The Merchant of Venice is a story that focuses on the specific injustice of anti-Semitism, we are interested in broadening the conversation and looking at root causes and similarities to how other groups are treated by majority populations. When Shakespeare wrote The Merchant of Venice, there were no Jews living in England as they had been expelled for over 300 years. When we are ignorant of another people based on lack of first-hand knowledge and experience, it is very easy to dehumanize them, and then it is easy to treat them badly. This message is as true today, in 2018 as it was in the 1590's when Shakespeare first wrote this play.
