More Than Homework: How Afterschool Programs Help Protect Youth Health

Learning doesn’t stop when the school day ends—and neither does prevention. 💙
Throughout the year, youth in our afterschool homework programs participate in interactive lessons led by our Tobacco Prevention Educator, learning about the real dangers of tobacco use and vaping. Through hands-on activities, open discussion, and age-appropriate visuals, students explore how smoking affects their bodies, brains, and long-term health—and why the choices they make now matter.
Tobacco and vaping products are often marketed to young people in ways that minimize risk and normalize addiction. Consistent, early education helps counter those messages. When youth understand why something is harmful—not just that it is—they are better prepared to make informed decisions, build confidence, and resist peer pressure.
This work is about more than prevention. It’s about empowerment, health, and supporting young people as they develop lifelong habits that promote wellness. By embedding education into trusted afterschool spaces, we create ongoing opportunities for learning, reflection, and growth.
Prevention works best when it’s continuous—and this is what that looks like in action.
