Community Action Month: Turning Commitment into Impact

Each May, communities across the country recognize Community Action Month—a time to highlight the work being done to reduce poverty, strengthen families, and build more resilient communities.

In Delaware, that work is led by First State Community Action Agency—the state’s only Community Action Agency.

For decades, we have worked alongside individuals and families to address the root causes of poverty while providing the support people need to move forward. From housing stability and financial empowerment to workforce development and family services, our approach is simple: meet people where they are and help them build a path to where they want to be.

But none of this work happens in isolation.

Why Community Action Matters Now

The challenges facing Delaware families are complex and interconnected. Housing costs continue to rise. Access to affordable childcare remains a barrier to employment. Many households are working hard—and still struggling to make ends meet.

Community Action Agencies were created to address exactly these kinds of challenges—not with one-size-fits-all solutions, but with locally driven, responsive programs that adapt to real community needs.

As Delaware’s only Community Action Agency, First State CAA plays a unique role. We are not just a service provider—we are a connector, a convener, and a catalyst for change across sectors.

And that work depends on strong partnerships with policymakers, community leaders, and advocates.

An Invitation to Engage

On May 7, 2026, we will host our Annual Legislative Luncheon at Legislative Hall.

This event is more than a gathering—it is an opportunity.

An opportunity to:

  • Hear directly about the impact of Community Action in Delaware

  • Connect with the people and programs making a difference

  • Better understand the challenges—and opportunities—facing our communities

  • Engage in meaningful dialogue about how we can move forward together

For legislators, it is a chance to see how policy decisions translate into real outcomes for constituents. For partners and advocates, it is a chance to lend your voice to the work of strengthening our communities.

Why Your Voice Matters

Community Action has always been rooted in the idea that change happens when people come together—across sectors, perspectives, and experiences.

Advocacy is a critical part of that work.

When you show up, you help:

  • Elevate the needs of Delaware families

  • Strengthen programs that are proven to work

  • Ensure resources are aligned with real community priorities

  • Build a shared understanding of what it takes to create lasting change

Your perspective matters and your voice can help shape the future of Community Action in Delaware.
